Soysun: A Designer’s Real-World Take
Designer Notes You’ll Actually Use
- Test Soysun in black and white first—no color tricks masking weak contrast or uneven rhythm.
- Check readability at 10pt on screen and 8pt printed—some glyphs tighten up more than others (the ‘e’ and ‘c’ hold well; the ‘s’ stays open).
- Mock it up on real substrates: uncoated paper, fabric swatches, matte vinyl. Soysun’s subtlety can vanish on glossy finishes if not calibrated.
- Compare uppercase vs. lowercase in context—its voice shifts meaningfully. Uppercase reads as grounded authority; lowercase leans into approachability.
- Review spacing: tracking at –20 works for headlines; avoid tightening body text—it’s not built for dense setting.
- Pair it intentionally: try it beside a warm serif font (like Tiempos Text), a crisp sans serif font (like Inter), a restrained script font (not decorative), and even a clean handwritten font for contrast—not competition.
- Confirm commercial licensing before use in client work, digital products, or resale design assets. Soysun is a premium font—its license covers most small business uses, but double-check usage in SaaS interfaces or embedded apps.
